Remove EVERYTHING From Your Closet
Where do you start? This is one step I thought, and thought, and thought over. Do you start with your shoes, purses, hats, clothes, or miscellaneous junk you have thrown in there thinking you would keep forever? What you want to do is start by removing EVERYTHING from your closet. That’s right, everything. Be ready for your bedroom to be blown up with everything but trust me, this is a necessary step.
First, have two large trash bags with you, one for trash and one for donating. While taking things out, think, does this serve me anymore? Have I worn this in the last year? If you answer no to either of those questions, get rid of it. At that point, it is just adding clutter to your life. If something is sentimental that you are taking out and you don’t want to get rid of it, set it aside for the time being.
If you have clothes that are too small but you are planning on losing weight, get rid of them. Not that you won’t lose the weight but right now, those extra clothes are clutter.
What about those purses and shoes? The same goes for them while you are taking them out. Have you worn or used them in the last year? No, then GET RID OF THEM. The more clutter you have in your life the more stressed you will feel overall.
Clean Your Closet
Ok, now you have everything OUT of your closet, you have a bag full of things to donate and a bag of trash. Good job! The hardest part is done! Now give your closet a quick clean. I was amazed by the amount of dust in the corners on the floor, make sure you vacuum well to get this crud out. Then I got Lysol wipes and wiped down all the racks.
Putting Everything Back in Your Closet
The next step is to put everything back IN your closet, in a pretty and organized fashion. Start with your clothes, since they are probably what take up the most room in your closet.
Begin by sorting your clothes into piles that make sense. For example, a pile of pants, sweaters, blouses, sweatshirts etc. Then, hang everything nicely on hangers and then into your closet. I organize mine from left to right as, jackets, sweatshirts, sweaters, blouses, dresses, dress pants, jeans, and then exercise pants. This is the order that made sense to me, your order may be different just make sure you put similar things together.
If you have hats, you can get a hat organizer that you attach to a hanger, then clip all your hats on and hang up the hanger. This will keep your hats organized, in one location, and easy to see. You can also use one of these for scarves. GAME CHANGER.
For shoes, you can get a shoe organizer that you attach to the back of the closet door. Using one of these will get shoes off your floor and organized in one location.
If you are keeping any small sentimental items or nick-nacks, get a decorative container like a woven basket to keep these in, this way it is organized, aesthetically pleasing, and in one location.
For any blankets that you store in your closet, put them in long totes. Keeping them in totes will prevent dust and dust mites from settling on them. If you can put them up high on a shelf in your closet put them there. Try to keep everything off your floor.
In conclusion, organizing your closet may seem like a daunting task, but by following these simple steps, you can transform your cluttered space into an organized oasis. Remember to declutter, categorize, and utilize storage solutions to maximize space and efficiency. As we’ve learned, a well-organized closet not only saves us time and stress, but it also adds value to our daily lives. So why wait? It’s time to take control of your closet and make it work for you, not against you. As the saying goes, “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” And with these tips, you’ll be well on your way to achieving just that. So let’s get organizing! Who knows, it may just be the beginning of a more organized and clutter-free lifestyle. As author Gretchen Rubin once said, “Outer order contributes to inner calm.” So go forth and conquer that closet chaos, and reap the benefits of a tidier and more peaceful life.
