How to Clean and Keep Clean Your Baseboards

Whether you have short baseboards, tall baseboards, decorative baseboards, baseboards with carpeted flooring, or hardwood flooring, they will get dirty and require some simple maintenance to have them look good. Baseboards are one area of the home that can go overlooked; before you know it, there is a fine layer of dirt, scuff marks, and more. Baseboards near doorways or heavy traffic areas tend to get dirty faster and need more care. Do you know how to clean and keep clean your baseboards? You can do several simple things to keep them looking good.  Read on to learn how to clean your baseboards as well as an added cleaning hack at the end.

Dust Your Baseboards

The first thing you will need to do regularly is dust your baseboards. Dusting your baseboards is as simple as running a microfiber cloth along them, and using a vacuum attachment, or a broom to get the fine layer of dust off. Remember to do this when you sweep or vacuum and make it part of that routine. By including this chore with your floor care, the maintenance of your baseboards will be simpler. Wash Your Baseboards

About every 6 months or as needed wash your baseboards. To do this, get a bowl with warm water and some Dawn dish soap. Use a rag and run the soapy rag along the baseboard. Rinse and repeat until you have washed all your baseboards. If your baseboards are especially dirty you can add a cup of white vinegar to your water and dish soap, this will help cut through the dirt even better.  I try to include this with my annual spring cleaning and fall cleaning. Read Fall Home Cleaning for more on fall cleaning tips and The Correct Way To Dust Your Home on cleaning tips using vinegar.

How to Remove Scuff Marks

An easy way to remove scuff marks is by using a magic eraser to gently scuff them away. It is simply amazing how well these little sponges remove just about any type of scuff mark from your baseboards. Always test on a small area before cleaning a large area. Do not use a magic eraser on your wall, it can remove paint! Check out the post Cleaning Hacks Using Magic Erasers  for cleaning hacks using magic erasers.

Cleaning Hack: Keeping the Dust Away Longer

To help prevent dust and dirt from accumulating on your baseboards save your used dryer sheets and run them along your baseboards. This helps reduce static to help repel dust, making your cleaning job last longer! Not only does it make your cleaning job last longer, but you also get another use out of your dryer sheets!
