Isn’t it amazing how much dust and dirt our homes accumulate? I like to think I have a relatively clean home, I try to stay up on all the basic chores but sometimes dirt and dust can sneak up on you. Keeping your blinds clean can be a pain in the toosh, to me anyway since I have the patience of a preschooler.
You SHOULD dust your blinds at least every couple of weeks to keep the dust at bay, if you don’t you will probably have to do a more thorough cleaning using methods I am about to give you that I have just had to use on all of the blinds in my home, and I am now aware that I have A LOT of blinds. I plan on keeping up on the dusting of my blinds from here on out and doing more of a deep clean twice a year. Read on to learn how to clean your wood blinds.

Begin by doing a dry dusting. I do not recommend adding water at this stage because water plus dirt and dust equals mud and a much bigger mess. Run a microfiber cloth along each panel, top to bottom to remove all the dust you can. You may need to shake out your rag or get a new one eventually depending on how dirty your blinds are. You can also use a product specifically made for dusting blinds such as this one, dusting tool. I have one and It works great. If you don’t have one of those or a microfiber cloth you can use an old sock, place it on your hand, and wipe down the blinds.
Once you have removed as much dirt and dust as you can, you may need to wash them to remove any hard-to-remove stains. For this I recommend getting a bucket of hot water and Dawn dish soap. Use a microfiber cloth and wipe down each panel from top to bottom. After you have done this get a clean wet cloth and wipe off each panel again to remove any soap residue. Now, open your blinds so that they can dry. Don’t open your windows though, if dust or dirt blows in it will stick to your now clean and wet blinds!
If you are cleaning blinds that are in the kitchen or a bathroom you may want to disinfect them while cleaning them. To do this, you will use one part warm water and one part vinegar to make a cleaning solution. Get a microfiber cloth and dip it in the solution, run it over each panel top and bottom. Let it dry completely with the blinds open.
You should use a dusting spray to cut down on the amount of dust that accumulates on your blinds. Dusting sprays make surfaces more difficult for dust and dirt to stick to, making your cleaning job last longer (something I am all about)! I am a big fan of using Dusting Spray but you can also use a DIY dusting spray. For this, you will get an empty clean spray bottle, add one cup water, ¼ cup vinegar, and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Spray on your blinds and wipe with a microfiber cloth.
