How to make your laundry smell amazing. This is something that I am constantly trying to figure out. I have three young kids (and a husband) and there is always a funky smell coming from somewhere. I have spent SOOOOO much money on laundry boosters, scent beads, scent crystals, fabric softeners, dryer sheets, different detergents, you name it, I have tried it. Some work amazing and your linens smell fabulous but, this frugal mama wanted to be a bit more budget-friendly and natural, especially since I am doing laundry for FIVE people. I have so much laundry that sometimes I wonder if people live in my home that I don’t know about! It’s constant! All this washing and additives can start adding up quickly, so I started looking for hacks that would make my laundry smell and feel amazing without breaking the bank weekly. Read on for tips that are budget-friendly, that will make your laundry smell amazing.
Add Vinegar to Your Laundry
I always add vinegar to my wash, I put it in the fabric softener compartment. I was a little nervous the first time I tried this, I mean who wants to smell like vinegar? Don’t worry, there is no vinegar smell left behind! Adding vinegar to your wash will help remove odors that are left on your linens, it will soften your lines and help kill any bacteria that are on your clothes. I don’t know about you but that is a lot of good things for such a cheap product. I typically use about 1 cup of vinegar per wash. Another great thing about washing with vinegar, if you use it with your towels they come out more fluffy, like new! I like to buy vinegar by the gallon at Walmart, it’s dirt cheap.
Add Baking Soda to Your Laundry
Baking soda is a great thing to add to your laundry, it can do so many things! You can use it as a spot treatment for stains, for this, you will make a paste of baking soda and water, rub it into the stain, and let it sit for 30 minutes. After that, toss the linen into the wash. Adding half a cup of baking soda to your wash cycle will help boost the effectiveness of your detergent and bleach if you are using it. By boosting the effectiveness of your detergent you won’t have to use as much! Another way you will be saving money! If you prefer to not use bleach, baking soda can also be used to help whiten your whites and brighten your light-colored laundry. Baking soda will also act as a fabric softener and odor neutralizer. For this again, you will add half a cup to the wash cycle, baking soda works amazing on neutralizing odors from sweat, vomit, and urine because the alkalinity combats the acidic nature of these harsh odors.
Make Your Own Scent Booster
I love a good scent booster, however, they can come with a big price tag for what you are buying. You can make your own laundry scent booster that is just as effective for a fraction of the cost and it is super easy to make! For this, you will be combining Epson salt and essential oil. I buy large bags, 8-10 pounds, from either Walmart or Amazon Epson Salt. Typically this will cost around 6 dollars. To make it, you will get a jar or container, fill it with Epson salt, and add roughly 30 drops of an essential oil of your choosing. I like lavender which also has an anti-mold effect Lavendar Essential Oil. Mix the salt and essential oil and let it sit for at least 30 minutes before you use it, this gives the Epson salt time to absorb the oils. This combo will give a nice scent boost to your laundry AND the Epson salt also softens your laundry.
Use Wool Dryer Balls with Essential Oils
Wool dryer balls are just awesome, they help cut your drying time by creating space between your clothes and absorbing moisture. If you add about 10 drops of essential oil to your dryer balls they will also give a light scent to your clothes while they are drying. Using wool dryer balls eliminates the need to use dryer sheets.
